Bailrigg FM, Lancaster University’s student radio station, returned from the annual SRA con last week, securing two gold and one bronze award at the Student Radio Association’s Amplify Awards, its first gold success since 2004. The awards recognise Bailrigg FM’s exceptional station culture, iconic on-air moments, and the dedication of its committee members.
For Best Station Culture Bailrigg FM was awarded a gold. Erin Strom, Music Director, accepted the award on behalf of the station saying, “It’s a really cliché thing to say but we are a family”. In last year’s LUSU Society Awards, Bailrigg FM also won the Diversity, Equality and Inclusion award in honour of their welcoming and inclusive environment.
The other gold was for Student Radio Moment of the Year, which was a segment of the Bailrigg FM Festive Bonanza “Bowland Tower Meets Students” in which PR & Marketing Manager, Anna Foster, dressed up as iconic Lancaster University landmark Bowland Tower. Foster shared on Linkedin: “I am beyond thrilled that Tiny Bowland Tower has been pronounced the Student Radio Moment of the year. I wanted to thank the entire Festive Bonanza production team, especially my fellow producers Elizabeth Coopland, Rowan Brigden as well as Erin Strom – and shout out to the entirety of Bailrigg FM’s exec team, past and present.”
In honour of her unwavering leadership and passion, Georgia Platt, Station Manager, was awarded bronze in the Most Committed Committee Member category. Platt shared her joy on LinkedIn saying, “If you told first year Georgia this is where she’d be three years later, she certainly wouldn’t believe you!”
Bailrigg FM is one of the country’s oldest student radio stations, celebrating it’s 55th anniversary last year, despite challenges posed by the pandemic, the station has revitalised its presence, increasing membership up to almost 100 members and 50 shows, as well as being more active in the wider student radio community. They have recently had many successes including the return of the annual Battle of the Bands in 2023, coverage of music festivals, the first ever Bailrigg FM Festive Bonanza in 2024 and their first industry speaker in recent years, Chris North, delivered a talk in February.
These efforts by the exec team have been recognised by these recent award wins. Along with this year’s bronze and gold awards, at last year’s Amplify awards they won bronze for Team of the Year and silver for Best Student Media Collaboration. At SRA awards in November, they also received the bronze award for Best Interview for their Hacker T Dog and Katie Thistleton interview at the Highest point festival.
Bailrigg FM are thrilled to accept these awards, their first gold awards from the SRA since 2004, and can’t wait until the rest of the exec return from the vacation period to celebrate this win together.
